Meet Bradley Abraham, DO, Keystone Radiologist at Connexia and one of the driving forces behind building Connexia into what we proudly are today.
In this spotlight chat, we asked Brad about his journey to Connexia, what it was like to build a teleradiology practice from the ground up, and his vision for the future of the field. From prioritizing flexibility and work-life balance to leveraging technology for efficiency, Brad shares his insights on what makes Connexia different, and what is on the horizon as we enter 2025.
Q: Tell us about your career journey so far. What brought you to Connexia?
A: I trained in Cincinnati for residency and fellowship before joining a radiology practice in South Carolina. Over time, I noticed that radiology workloads were increasing for us just like the rest of the industry. It was putting a strain on everyone, including myself.
To relieve the grind, I switched to working nights, and as I started transitioning out of that schedule, I was encouraged to take a leap of faith and join Connexia. Because Connexia was new, I came in with the mindset of not just doing things the way they’d always been done. I wanted to prioritize work-life balance and bring that focus to Connexia. The goal was to make radiology enjoyable again. That was my motivation.
Q: And what was that experience like — the early days of building Connexia?
A: To start, I went back to square one. As a radiologist, how would I want to build a practice from scratch? How can my colleagues and I create a place where radiologists truly want to come to work? How do we build the incentives right to ensure fair compensation, and also have the flexibility and lifestyle benefits radiologists desire?
Ultimately, how we envisioned the Connexia model came together through a lot of collaboration with my peers on the Connexia administrative leadership team, and my colleagues - past and present. I was inspired by them and their unique needs - many of whom shared ideas on what they would improve if given the chance.
When it comes to building the Connexia radiologist team, we hired some radiologists before we even had a study in the door. In some ways, it was a leap of faith to ask people to leave private practices and join us.
Today, I am proud of the radiology talent Connexia draws. One thing I love about expanding our team is that I don’t have to “sell” Connexia. I don’t need to. What draws people in is the flexibility, and the culture we’ve been able to build so quickly. The shift to remote work during COVID changed the landscape, and now flexibility is a major factor in job decisions. Add to that a feeling of being connected to something bigger while still having a flexible lifestyle, and it’s a win-win
Q: What does a typical day at work look like for you?
A: Every day is different. A lot of my time is spent managing day-to-day needs for our team. Because of our unique model, the biggest task is matching radiologists with the right volume based on how much they want to work. I work closely with Brian Phelan, Connexia’s President, to align our hiring with demand.
I also focus on quality learning initiatives and bigger strategic projects. In 2025, we’re prioritizing even more technology upgrades to drive efficiency - things like dictation software to streamline workflows and AI-driven processes to enhance both efficiency and quality across the group.
Q: From your perspective, what’s next for radiology as a field?
A: Year after year, scan volumes increase, but there aren’t enough radiologists to keep up. And between an aging population and the broader use of imaging, I don’t see that trend slowing down.
The radiology landscape could get challenging in the next few years. Something has to shift to address the shortage. AI isn’t at the point where it can replace radiologists—but it can absolutely make us more efficient and improve quality. Even so, talent is still most critical.
I believe the key to attracting and retaining radiologists is improving quality of life, primarily through flexibility. Whether it’s experienced physicians facing burnout or a new generation that values work-life balance, I think flexibility is the single most important factor for most radiologists. That’s exactly why we structured Connexia the way we did.
Q: What are you most proud of on your Connexia journey so far?
A: I’m most proud of the culture we’ve built. We have genuinely good people who support each other. No one feels isolated. Even in a remote environment, you can see that we consider ourselves a true team. And while in-person interaction has its benefits, we work hard to replicate that sense of connection through virtual events and a lot of communication.
And for our clients, we’re always focused on quality, turnaround time, and support. From a client’s perspective, what more could you want than fast turnaround times and high-quality reads?
Q: When you’re not at work, where can we find you?
A: When I’m not working, I spend my time with my wife, our three kids, and our new mini Goldendoodle puppy.
